Ingredients

For the Cake
  • 1 serving Chocolate Cake Store-bought or homemade
For the Filling
  • 2 cups Whipped Cream Heavy cream for best texture
  • 2 cups Cherries Fresh preferred, adjust if using canned or frozen
  • 1 tablespoon Kirsch (Cherry Liqueur) Optional for non-alcoholic versions
For the Topping
  • 1/2 cup Chocolate Shavings Dark chocolate recommended

Equipment

  • round baking pan
  • Electric mixer
  • trifle dish or large glass bowl

Method

Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. Bake the Chocolate Cake: Prepare your chocolate cake according to the recipe or package instructions. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a round baking pan. Pour the batter into the pan and bake for 25 to 30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Once done, remove the cake from the oven, let it cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer it to a wire rack to cool completely.
  2. Whip the Cream: In a large mixing bowl, pour in the heavy cream and begin whipping it with an electric mixer on medium speed. Continue whipping until soft peaks form, about 3 to 5 minutes. Be attentive to avoid over-whipping. Gently fold in a tablespoon of sugar and a splash of vanilla extract.
  3. Prepare the Cherries: If using fresh cherries, wash and pit them before slicing in half. For a richer flavor, soak them in a splash of Kirsch for about 10 minutes. If using canned cherries, drain and pat dry.
  4. Assemble the Trifle Layers: Layer in a clear trifle dish or a large glass bowl. Start with cooled chocolate cake chunks, then a layer of whipped cream, followed by cherries. Repeat until ingredients are used, ending with whipped cream.
  5. Garnish and Chill: Sprinkle chocolate shavings on top and add whole cherries if desired. Cover with plastic wrap and chill in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours.
  6. Serve with Joy: Remove from the refrigerator and serve with a large spoon, showcasing layers. Enjoy!
