Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. Cream the butter and shortening using an electric mixer on medium speed for 2-3 minutes until light and fluffy.
  2. Gradually add black cocoa powder and vanilla extract, mixing on low speed, then increase to medium for 1-2 minutes.
  3. With the mixer on low, gradually add powdered sugar, about ½ cup at a time, for 1-2 minutes per addition.
  4. Drizzle in heavy cream after sugar is fully incorporated, and mix until desired consistency is reached.
  5. Add black gel food coloring until desired hue is achieved, mixing thoroughly after each addition.
  6. For deeper color, reserve ½ cup frosting, warm it slightly, add more gel, and mix back into the main batch.
  7. Cover the bowl and chill for at least 2-3 hours, preferably overnight, to meld flavors and deepen color.
  8. Before use, let frosting come to room temperature for about 30 minutes and stir to restore smoothness.
